What Is Soap Works?

Soap Works is one of three small businesses managed by the not-for-profit organization, On the Job Ministries (OTJ). OTJ starts-up and runs small businesses that employ, train and mentor at-risk youth who live on the West Side of the city of Buffalo. With help from adult mentors, our young people manufacture, package and market each bar of Soap Works soap. All profits made from the sale of our soap are used to hire more youth, grow existing businesses or start new ones.

What's in Your Soap?

Our soap is made from a blend of rich coconut, palm kernel, olive, castor and canola oils and is infused with high quality essential oils and extracts to produce a naturally moisturizing and beautifully fragrant bar of soap. Because our soap is free of harmful dyes, chemicals and detergents, it is gentle and mild.

How Do You Make Your Soap?

At our micro-soapery in the heart of the West Side of Buffalo, we hand mix each bar of soap using time-tested recipes and a special process in which the fatty acids in the oils react with sodium hydroxide and distilled water. This process of produces a mild and gentle soap base “superfatted” with natural moisturizers. Essential oils and extracts are then added and the soap is cured for several days. After the aging process is complete, we test each batch to verify it meets our quality and safety standards. Then we hand cut, wrap and label each bar of soap and keep it in a temperature-controlled environment to ensure you receive a perfectly blended, wonderfully aromatic bar of soap that will leave your skin feeling silky and smooth.

How Is Your Soap Different from Those I Buy in the Grocery Store?

Generally speaking, commercial soaps are a blend of animal fats, fillers, dyes, petroleum products, detergents & chemicals. Soap Works soap contains none of these harmful ingredients. Further, most commercial soap leave the skin feeling dry and itchy because the manufacturers extract natural glycerin from their soap and sell it to pharmaceutical companies for lotions and creams. Soap Works soap is specially made so that all natural glycerin is retained and infused into every bar of soap to leave skin clean and yet full of moisture.
